UNIVERSITY OF WITWATERSRAND, UNIVERSITY 6TH YEAR, B.ARCH
TUTOR: DONALD TINDALE

The purpose of the work was stimulated by the pressing needs of the homeless people. The discourse examines and investigates homelessness in the city of Johannesburg and explores the possibilities to empower and upgrade people’s life through the construction of such a project. It is hoped that the building process and operation would accelerate the easing of homeless crisis.

The programme is based on realistic data and existing crisis. The project tries to embrace all possibilities to facilitate homeless people from getting information, temporary accommodation and basic services, to getting access to empowerment programmes.

It is a combination of informative, administrative, meeting, researching, social, recreational, producing, learning and trading facilities into one scheme, situation between several major crisis areas.

Empowerment is the ultimate goal of the project. The project manifests people’s dire need and rights to accessible information, decent living condition, learning and working environments. Architecture space, experience and aesthetics are the responses to the programme and the site conditions.
